Where do we come from?
I find it interesting to speculate on where we originated geographically, although I doubt if there is a single point of origin for the many branches of Vickers that now exist.
S & N Genealogy Supplies publish a CD which contains a 2% extract of the 1851 UK Census. Checking this for the incidence of the number of entries for Vickers across the country produces some interesting statistics which give an indication of the relative location of Vickers families at that time:
|
Shropshire Cumberland Derbyshire Lincolnshire Middlesex Lancashire Yorkshire Nottinghamshire Cheshire Durham Surrey Northumberland |
21.95% 20.12% 10.98% 9.76% 9.15% 8.54% 7.32% 4.27% 3.05% 2.44% 1.83% 0.61% |
It is of course only a random sample but I find it provides an interesting picture.
By 1881 things appear to have changed. By that time the most Vickers are recorded in Lancashire, followed by Yorkshire, Lincoln, London, Durham and Cheshire in that order. Shropshire had dropped well down the list.
